Always empty the watering can and the paddling pool

The water in the paddling pool and in the bird bath should also be changed every day in midsummer. After the rather cool beginning of summer the larvae stayed in the water longer than usual. But now the mosquitoes are slipping.

To contain the infestation, the rain barrel should also be drained. If you don’t want to simply empty the precious giebwasser, you can remove larvae with a kasher. If you have not found any in the water yet, you have been lucky. But then it makes sense to cover the reservoir now, wagner recommends.

If the mosquitoes do start buzzing through the garden, the only thing to do is to cover them up and stink them up. "The most important means of self-protection are light-colored clothes and repellents", says thomas wagner. The insect repellents spread a scent that repels the bloodsuckers. They are available as sticks, creams, sprays or on plasters. Natural alternatives are lemon balm, laurel and lavender.

In the garden pond, the larvae are no problem: "carp-like fish such as goldfish or koi like larvae, says the garden expert. One or two nesting boxes near the pond provide shelter for hungry birds. A fountain is even better: it keeps the water surface in motion and makes life difficult for the larvae.
